Brighton College Singapore: From Prep Roots to Full All-Through School
Founded in 2020 as a joint venture between Brighton College UK and Cognita, the Singapore campus has grown year by year from a small primary into an all-through school launching Sixth Form in 2026.
Brighton College Singapore opened its doors on 27 August 2020, the product of a partnership announced in May 2019 between Brighton College UK and Cognita, the global schools group. The deal was reported by The PIE News at the time as a deliberate move to complement Cognita's existing US and Australian schools in the city-state. The structure was clear from the outset: Brighton College would lead the educational philosophy, ethos and curriculum; Cognita would run day-to-day operations, with governance by a joint board.
The company was incorporated on 14 February 2019 and registered with Singapore's Committee for Private Education in October of that year. When the school opened the following August it catered for pupils up to Year 4 only, making it a small primary in everything but name. Its campus at 1 Chuan Lane, in the Serangoon area, placed it within one of Singapore's largest education precincts, sharing the site with the Australian International School and Stamford American International School, both also Cognita schools.
The Parent School
The founding institution has substantial weight behind it. Brighton College UK was established in 1845 by William Aldwin Soames as the first Victorian independent school in Sussex. By the time the Singapore campus opened, the Sunday Times had named Brighton College its School of the Decade, a title that featured prominently in every piece of early marketing. Singapore was the fifth international campus in the Brighton network, after schools in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Dubai and Bangkok, though the school's own materials now describe it as the sixth, reflecting subsequent additions to the family.
Year-by-Year Growth
The school added year groups steadily. By 2021 it had extended to Year 6 and, in the same year, won the HoneyKids Asia Education Awards for Best New School and Best Small School. CPE approval to teach Years 7 and 8, announced in July 2022, brought the upper age to 13 from August 2023. A further announcement in April 2023 set out plans for full all-through provision to Year 13, subject to regulatory approval.
The business classification recorded by Singapore's corporate registry tracked this expansion: until August 2024 the school was classed as an international pre-primary and primary institution; after that date it became an international and foreign system school without age restriction, reflecting the addition of secondary-phase provision.
Leadership Changes
Paul Wilson, who had spent eight years at Brighton College UK leading academic, co-curricular and pastoral work, was appointed founding Headmaster. He was replaced in 2021 by Andrew Noakes, who led the school through its first expansion phase and was in post when the all-through ambition was publicly announced. Nick Davies took over as Head of College in April 2024, joining from Stamford School in Lincolnshire where he had been acting Headmaster. Davies, a former geography teacher and commissioned military officer, still teaches a weekly geography class. Gavin Clark heads the Prep school.
Curriculum and Accreditation
The school follows the Early Years Foundation Stage in Pre-Prep and the English National Curriculum from Year 1, leading into IGCSEs from Year 10. Mandarin is the official second language from the earliest years; French is added from Year 3. The school holds BSO and COBIS accreditations, and in 2023 was awarded EduTrust certification by SkillsFuture Singapore with the maximum four-year validity period, running to October 2027. Its awards tally since opening stands at 17, including recognition in the Spear's Schools Index 2026 as one of the world's top 100 private schools.
Present Day
The school currently enrolls around 504 pupils, from Pre-Nursery at 18 months through to Year 10. Each year group is capped at three classes of 22, a deliberate limit that the school describes as central to its community feel. Through its Cognita relationship, pupils access the Australian International School's 25-metre pool, sports halls and theatre. Sixth Form opens in August 2026 with 20 A-level subjects on offer, completing the all-through vision that Cognita and Brighton College UK set out in 2019.
