Brighton College Singapore: from prep school to all-through in five years
Opened in August 2020 as a primary-only campus, Brighton College Singapore has grown year by year into a full British school for pupils aged 18 months to 18 years.
Brighton College Singapore opened its doors in August 2020, a partnership between Brighton College UK and the global schools group Cognita. It was, at launch, primarily a prep school, taking pupils from 18 months with an initial cohort starting at Year 5. The plan was always to grow, but the pace would depend on parental demand and regulatory approval.
Origins
The parent institution, Brighton College UK, was founded in 1845 by William Aldwin Soames, the first independent school established in Sussex. By the time Singapore was announced, the UK school had been named Independent School of the Decade by The Sunday Times, and its international network already included campuses in Bangkok, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Al Ain. Singapore was the fifth such campus, and the first to be operated in partnership with Cognita.
Cognita was the natural operational partner. The group already ran the Australian International School and Stamford American International School on the same Serangoon campus at 1 Chuan Lane, Singapore 554299. Brighton College slotted into that shared site, giving it immediate access to sports fields, a 25-metre swimming pool, indoor halls, and a theatre without the capital cost of building them. The youngest pupils, from Pre-Nursery through Year 1, were housed in Cognita's Early Learning Village, a purpose-built early-years hub on the same grounds.
The announcement of the partnership was made in 2019. Richard Cairns, then headmaster of Brighton College UK, described the Cognita connection as giving the Singapore school access to a global network as "a powerful advantage." Michael Drake, Cognita's CEO for Asia, framed it as a complement to the group's existing US and Australian schools in the city-state.
Growth
The school opened with Year 5 and expanded one year group at a time. By 2022 it had reached Year 8 and enrolled 185 pupils. In August 2023, Years 7 and 8 formally launched as the start of a Senior School section. The following year, Year 9 was added, with the first cohort of 13 to 14-year-olds enrolling in August 2024. Over the summer of 2024, the Senior School premises were upgraded with a dining hall, common room, and IT suite. Year 10 followed in August 2025, with sixth form years planned for subsequent intakes. The stated ambition, confirmed by Cognita in an April 2023 announcement, is a full through-school from Pre-Nursery to Year 13.
Leadership has tracked the school's growth. Founding Headmaster Paul Wilson handed over to Andrew Noakes in 2021. Nick Davies took over as Head of College in April 2024, arriving from the acting headmastership of Stamford School in Lincolnshire. Gavin Clark heads the Prep section.
In 2021, during only its second year of operation, the school won Best New School and Best Small School at the HoneyKids Asia Education Awards. It joined FOBISIA, the Federation of British International Schools in Asia, in June 2024, as the Senior School section came on stream.
Curriculum and identity
The curriculum follows the English National Curriculum throughout, preceded by the Early Years Foundation Stage in Pre-Nursery and Pre-Prep. From Year 7 onwards the school prepares pupils for IGCSEs, with A Levels to follow as the sixth form opens. From Year 5 and above, pupils have specialist teachers for all subjects and move between classrooms, a deliberate preparation for senior school life.
The school holds BSO and COBIS accreditation, confirming it is delivering British education to UK independent school standards. On Singapore's domestic regulatory framework, it holds EduTrust certification at the maximum four-year validity (2023 to 2027), awarded by the Skills and Workforce Development Agency. EduTrust's four-year grade is reserved for institutions meeting the highest standards of governance and student protection. The school's registration number with the SWDA is 201904884D.
The Brighton identity is carried through deliberately. The school uses the same three pillars as the UK parent, curiosity, confidence, and kindness, and maintains regular contact: staff from Brighton UK make termly visits to the Singapore campus. The pelican, Brighton College's mascot, appears throughout the buildings, alongside images of Brighton Pier and beach huts. Inter-school sport takes place across the Brighton College network internationally.
Academically, the school is selective. From Year 2 upwards, applicants sit CAT4 cognitive assessments benchmarked against the UK national average, and younger-year entry involves age-appropriate tasks with teachers. Senior School academic scholarships are available for Years 7 to 10.
Present day
The school currently has 504 pupils across Pre-Nursery to Year 10, with typical class sizes of around 19. It occupies 1 Chuan Lane in the Serangoon area, ten minutes' walk from Lorong Chuan MRT on the Circle Line, sharing the site with the Australian International School and Stamford American International School. Through the Cognita campus arrangement, Brighton pupils use AIS's full outdoor facilities and indoor sports infrastructure.
In 2026, the school was named among the World's Top 100 Private Schools in the Spear's Schools Index, and was shortlisted as a finalist for the GESS Awards 2026 in the Ambassador for the Environment category. As described by WhichSchoolAdvisor, the school's dual anchor, Cognita providing operational infrastructure and Brighton College UK providing academic culture and ethos, continues to define its character as it builds toward a full through-school offering.
