After: AISL Harrow Schools

Harrow International School Guangzhou is preparing to open its doors in September 2026, making it the 15th Harrow-branded school in Asia operated by Asia International School Limited (AISL). The school is located in Huangpu District, an area of Guangzhou long associated with innovation and technology investment, and will serve children aged three to 18 from expatriate families and holders of Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR and Taiwan passports.

The opening follows a launch ceremony held last autumn at which the Headmaster of Harrow School in the UK, Alastair Land, joined government officials and business leaders to mark the occasion. According to AISL Harrow, the event also saw the release of a report titled "The Core Competencies of Future Talent in the Age of AI," signalling the curriculum priorities AISL intends to pursue at the new campus.

A curriculum built around future competencies

The school will follow the British National Curriculum through to IGCSE and A Level, a pathway consistent with all AISL Harrow International Schools. What differentiates the Guangzhou offering, the group says, is a sharper focus on three areas: digital literacy, innovation and entrepreneurship. A dedicated AISL FutureLab, described as a state-of-the-art technology innovation space, will be integrated directly into lessons from the outset. The mathematics curriculum has also been accelerated by approximately one year relative to the standard British programme.

Alex Reed, who currently serves as Head Master of Harrow International School Shanghai and has been appointed Founding Head Master of the Guangzhou campus, said students will be "immersed in a unique environment that blends academic rigour with innovation and entrepreneurship programmes." He is joined by Jack Benstead as Founding Head of Lower School, a former founding member of Harrow LiDe School Hengqin.

The Greater Bay Area bet

AISL's choice of Huangpu is not incidental. The district hosts the Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City, a joint development hub that counts the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University among its anchor institutions. AISL has signed a framework agreement for educational exchange with the Guangzhou Development Zone, offering students structured access to the broader enterprise ecosystem on their doorstep.

The Guangzhou opening is the latest step in what has become one of the most extensive branded-school networks in Asia. AISL currently operates campuses across mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, Thailand and Japan, and its students posted 1,244 university offers in 2024, averaging four per student, including placements at Oxbridge and Ivy League institutions. With the September opening now weeks away, the question for the sector is whether a 15th campus further cements the Harrow name in China or begins to dilute it.
