Nord Anglia Set to Take Over Kuala Lumpur IB Stalwart Mont'Kiara in August

Mont'Kiara International School has spent more than thirty years building one of Kuala Lumpur's most recognisable international school brands. In August 2026, it hands that brand to new ownership. According to a PR Newswire announcement issued in May, Nord Anglia Education has acquired MKIS and will formally integrate it into its global network of 90 schools across 37 countries when the new academic year begins.

The acquisition makes MKIS Nord Anglia's second campus in Kuala Lumpur, joining the British International School of Kuala Lumpur, and its fifteenth school across Southeast Asia. For the world's largest premium international schools group, the move extends a pattern of consolidation that has seen it absorb well-regarded independent schools across the region rather than building new campuses from scratch. For MKIS, it represents a change of character as significant as any in the school's three-decade history.

What stays the same

Nord Anglia has been consistent in its messaging that MKIS's academic identity will not be dismantled. The school offers the full International Baccalaureate continuum, including the Primary Years, Middle Years, and Diploma programmes, alongside a US High School Diploma pathway. Its students achieved an average IB score of 34.4 in 2025, well above the global average of 30.58. That curriculum mix and the 180-plus staff who deliver it are expected to remain in place.

Tan, the school's chairman and founder, who led the institution for more than 25 years before the acquisition. What the Nord Anglia affiliation adds

Students will gain access to Nord Anglia's collaboration programmes with MIT, The Juilliard School, UNICEF, and IMG Academy, along with the group's Global Campus online platform that connects learners across its global network. Teachers will be able to draw on Nord Anglia University's professional development resources, including leadership training and a community of more than 22,000 educators. Those benefits are real, though families who chose MKIS for its founder-led independence may weigh them differently than those drawn primarily by brand recognition.

For Kuala Lumpur's international school market more broadly, the acquisition raises a question that is becoming harder to ignore. With Nord Anglia now running two KL campuses and ISP operating Nexus International School, large groups increasingly shape a market that once prized independent governance. How MKIS's community experience changes under group management, and whether Nord Anglia positions its two very different KL schools as complementary or competing products, will be closely watched by the families and operators who remain outside the group umbrella.
