Bangkok's First Buddhist-Inspired International School Opens This August
The Jataka School will open near BTS Bangchak this August, weaving UK primary curriculum with dharma learning in a bilingual English-Mandarin setting guided by Buddhist philosophy.
Bangkok is gaining a school unlike any that has opened in the city before. The Jataka School, a deliberately small early years and primary school in the Bangchak neighbourhood of Sukhumvit, will welcome its first students this August, combining the UK Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stages 1 and 2 with a dharma learning framework rooted in Buddhist thought, according to WhichSchoolAdvisor.
The school takes its name from the Jataka tales, a collection of around 550 Buddhist scriptures recounting the previous incarnations of the Buddha, and forms part of a global network of Buddhist-inspired institutions with schools in New York, Bhutan, Singapore, and India. Its founding educational vision is guided by Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, a Bhutanese teacher and filmmaker whose Khyentse Foundation supports the project.
British curriculum as the foundation
On the academic side, the school follows the national curriculum for England, delivered bilingually: students rotate between English-medium and Mandarin-medium days, with Thai language and culture woven in daily throughout. Weekly philosophy sessions and structured mindfulness practice sit alongside the conventional timetable. The school describes its method as weaving an evidence-based curriculum with a pioneering dharma learning framework, with the aim of developing what it calls children's natural curiosity.
The campus, within walking distance of BTS Bangchak, is built around sustainability. Facilities include a biodynamic farm and nursery, a dedicated cooking area, outdoor playgrounds, a swimming pool, and exploratory ateliers. Meals are locally sourced, and the school runs a community recycling centre on site.
A market already busy with arrivals
The Jataka School enters a Bangkok international market that has been unusually active this year. At least four new internationally-oriented schools are opening in or around the city this August, among them the first Thailand campuses of Dulwich College, Wycombe Abbey, and SPGS. At the same time, Verso International School, founded in 2020, permanently closed this month, a reminder that the market's rapid expansion carries risk alongside opportunity.
For the opening academic year the school will take Early Years 1 and 2. Year 1 and Year 2 will be added in August 2027, with further year groups to follow. Fees have not been published. What The Jataka School offers that most of its new competitors do not is a clearly articulated values framework, one that positions Buddhist philosophy not as a supplement to the curriculum but as its organising principle.
