ESF Completes Its Through-Train Model with a Guaranteed Pathway for Every Family

The English Schools Foundation has announced it will guarantee K1 families a place at a linked primary school from the 2027/28 academic year, according to the South China Morning Post, completing a through-train model that now stretches from nursery all the way to Year 13.

ESF, Hong Kong's largest provider of English-medium international education, first introduced through-train secondary links in 2019, when it began guaranteeing primary school leavers a place at a designated secondary. The new kindergarten-to-primary link is the final stage, creating what the group describes as an unbroken 15-year educational journey for families that enter at K1.

How the linked model works

Under the associated school structure, each ESF kindergarten is now paired with one or more designated primary schools. Families applying for a K1 place for the 2027/28 year will be told their linked school at the point of offer. On completing the kindergarten phase, their child is guaranteed a primary school place without a separate admissions process.

Three new ESF kindergartens are opening this month to anchor the expanded network: campuses in Sai Sha, Kornhill, and West Kowloon, which together add around 400 first-year places. Each is directly linked to associated primary and secondary schools, giving parents early clarity about their child's route through school for more than a decade.

Implications for admissions

For families navigating Hong Kong's competitive early-years market, the change removes one of the most pressured steps in the process. An ESF kindergarten place now carries a longer-term commitment, not just a single year's enrolment. The practical trade-off is that families entering at K1 are, in effect, locking in to the group's network for the duration, with fewer opportunities to switch laterally once the pathway is under way.

The move reflects wider pressure on Hong Kong's international school providers to offer greater certainty at the enrolment stage. Several other operators have adopted linked-school structures in recent years, but ESF's scale, covering 22 schools and around 17,000 students, gives its model particular weight in the market.
