BASIS Opens Its First Beijing Campus with a 1.1 Billion Renminbi Price Tag

BASIS Bilingual School Beijing opened its doors this week in Houshayu, Shunyi District, becoming the first campus of the US-origin school network in China's capital. The founding cohort runs from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 9, with the school planned to grow into a full Pre-K to Grade 12 programme as enrolment builds. According to the BASIS International Schools blog, the Beijing opening coincides with the start of a new academic year across the group's 15 campuses in eight Chinese cities.

The scale of the campus reflects the ambition of the project. The site in Shunyi covers 100,000 square metres, with a constructed area of 70,000 square metres and a total investment reported at 1.1 billion renminbi, equivalent to roughly US$150 million at current exchange rates. Facilities include a 400-metre running track, a heated swimming pool, two black-box theatres, dedicated science laboratories, and specialist rooms for arts and music. A boarding wing will accommodate up to 800 residential students.

Bilingual, not international

Shunyi has long been Beijing's centre of gravity for international education, home to campuses serving children of foreign-passport holders employed at embassies, corporations, and development agencies. BASIS Bilingual School Beijing sits in a distinct segment. Its curriculum, delivered in both English and Mandarin by a faculty trained in the BASIS methodology, is designed primarily for Chinese-national families seeking rigorous academic preparation for domestic and global university pathways. At full capacity the school will hold 2,300 students, placing it among the larger bilingual campuses in the city.

BASIS Bilingual School Beijing becomes the 15th campus in China for the broader group, which operates across cities including Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wuhan, and Chengdu. The network began as BASIS International, a US charter-school operator that expanded into China, before building a parallel bilingual track specifically targeting the Chinese domestic market.

Testing market resilience

Beijing's bilingual-school sector went through a convulsive period after the regulatory changes of 2021, when restrictions on for-profit education disrupted enrolment at many privately run schools. Shunyi stabilised faster than most other parts of the city, insulated by sustained demand from both diplomatic families and an affluent local base whose appetite for dual-language academic programmes has proved relatively durable. How quickly a campus of this size fills its rolls at a competitive fee level will be a closely watched test of how robustly that recovery has held into 2026.

The opening comes as back-to-school momentum builds across China's bilingual-school sector. Beijing's new BASIS site is by far the largest of the group's additions this term, and for the city's established international-school operators, the entry of another large, well-capitalised bilingual school into Shunyi adds to the supply side of a market whose demand, while real, is not without limits.
