Jakarta's Young British School Extends to A-Levels and Plans a Second Campus

The Independent School of Jakarta, which opened in 2022 and has expanded its year groups annually since, has announced that students will now be able to complete their entire education at the school, from Early Years through GCSE to A-Levels, without changing institutions. According to the school's announcement, the A-Level curriculum launches with 12 subjects, spanning Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, English Literature, History, Computer Science, Art, Modern Foreign Languages, and Music.

A dedicated senior campus to house GCSE and A-Level students is planned for a site in Pondok Indah, South Jakarta, 300 metres from the existing junior campus. The new facility will include science laboratories, technology labs, art and music studios, a theatre, a library, and a football pitch, with climate-responsive architecture designed for Jakarta's tropical conditions. The campus is expected to open in 2028.

Continuity as the core proposition

ISJ has built its market position on small class sizes, capped at 15 in Early Years and 20 from Year 1, and a one-to-nine staff-to-pupil ratio. Head of School Eileen Fisher said the expansion "ensures families can stay with us the whole way, through GCSEs, through A-Levels, and on to university, with the same values, the same teachers, and the same continuity of care from the very first day." For families who enrolled at founding, the extension removes the most significant structural limitation they faced: the need to move their children to a different school at age 13 or 14.

The school reports that students score in the top ten per cent of international schools, 17 points above the international average in English and 18 points above in Mathematics. ISJ operates under The Schools Trust, a UK-registered charity governing 16 British international schools across 11 countries. Across that network, 65 to 81 per cent of IGCSE grades are at A or A*, against a UK national average of around 22 per cent. Graduates have gone on to Oxford, Cambridge, Stanford, Princeton, and leading universities in Asia, Australia, and Europe.

The Jakarta market

ISJ operates within a Jakarta international school market that draws both expatriate families and local affluent households, with demand from the latter growing faster in recent years. The school was ranked the top-rated British-curriculum school in the city this year, and twenty-second across Asia, in an independent assessment. Its annual fees starting from USD 9,135 sit below the top tier of Jakarta's international school market, a positioning that has supported faster enrolment growth than schools at the premium end of the fee band.

The A-Level expansion, followed by a physical senior campus in 2028, represents the most consequential milestone in the school's short history. It also positions ISJ as one of the few British-curriculum schools in Indonesia able to offer a full continuous pathway from nursery to university preparation within a single institution, a distinction that has proved a strong differentiator in markets such as Singapore and Hong Kong.
