Wellington College Opens Its First Indonesian Campus in BSD City

Wellington College has opened its first Indonesian campus, welcoming around 350 founding students to a 13,000-square-metre site in BSD City, the large Sinar Mas Land township south of Jakarta that has grown over three decades into one of the capital's most significant residential clusters for upper-income Indonesian families. The arrival of a Wellington-branded school in the township is the clearest sign yet that premium British school operators see domestic Indonesian demand as a market worth entering directly.

Wellington College Independent School Jakarta is operated by Wellington College Education Singapore Group, a company controlled by Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim. According to NOW! Jakarta, the school opened for the 2026-27 academic year in August, initially welcoming children from Pre-Nursery through to Year 4. Founding head of school Melissa Meyers has emphasised integrating Indonesian culture and language into the curriculum alongside a British-rooted academic framework. Annual fees run from IDR 395 million to IDR 470 million, roughly USD 24,000 to USD 29,000 at current rates.

Fee and curriculum positioning

The school follows the English National Curriculum alongside Indonesia's Ministry of Education standards, a pairing that has become increasingly common among international schools serving affluent local families who want internationally recognised qualifications without severing all connection to the national system. The fee band places the school below Jakarta's most established international schools, which typically charge USD 35,000 to USD 45,000, but substantially above the Indonesian private school mainstream. The price point is calibrated for out-of-pocket local families, not for corporate expatriate packages.

Wellington College Education Singapore Group is a distinct entity from Wellington College International, which operates campuses in China and Thailand under a separate licensing structure. Both carry the Wellington name under licence from Wellington College in Berkshire, established in the mid-nineteenth century as a national memorial to the Duke of Wellington. The group has described the Indonesian campus as the most significant step in Wellington College's global expansion in the school's history.

The BSD City logic

The choice of BSD City is instructive. The township is not a traditional Jakarta expatriate enclave of the kind found in Kemang or Pondok Indah. It has grown instead as a self-contained planned city, home to roughly one million residents, with a demographic profile built around Indonesian professionals and business families. Schools that have entered BSD City in recent years have generally found a willing market for premium education, provided the fee level aligns with local willingness to pay rather than with corporate reimbursement ceilings.

Within four years, the group plans to open a senior school on a larger BSD City site for Years 8 to 13, completing a full K-12 pipeline. That timeline depends on enrolment growth across the junior years. If the founding cohort builds steadily and waiting lists develop, the senior expansion is likely to follow on schedule. If it does not, the Jakarta campus will join a list of Asian school openings where the junior phase was successfully launched but the senior school proved harder to fill. For now, the opening marks the start of what will be a multi-year test of British school brand power in Southeast Asia's largest economy.
