AISL Launches Its 15th Harrow Campus in China's Greater Bay Area

Harrow International School Guangzhou opened this September as the 15th Harrow-branded campus operated by Asia International Schools Limited (AISL) across the region. According to AISL, the school is sited in the Huangpu District's technology innovation corridor and will hold a formal public launch ceremony on 20 September, with the Head Master of Harrow School in the UK, Alastair Land, among the attendees.

The school admits children aged 3 to 18 from expatriate families and residents of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. It delivers the British National Curriculum through to IGCSE and A Level, with a planned enrolment capacity of around 1,530 students and approximately 300 boarding places, making it one of the larger Harrow campuses in the Greater Bay Area.

Innovation as the differentiator

Guangzhou's new campus sets itself apart from other AISL schools through a pronounced focus on digital literacy, innovation and entrepreneurship. Two purpose-built facilities, the AISL FutureLab technology innovation centre and a dedicated Entrepreneurship Centre, are integrated into the school's curriculum rather than positioned as optional enrichment. The approach reflects a deliberate attempt to differentiate in a region where the British curriculum brand alone has become table stakes.

Dr Rosanna Wong, chairman of AISL, said the goal was to "create a future-ready school that nurtures pioneering talent," pointing to the school's location within Huangpu's technology park as a deliberate choice aligned with the district's economic character. Alex Reed, the school's Founding Head Master, joins from within the AISL network.

AISL's fifth campus in the Greater Bay Area

Guangzhou is AISL's fifth campus in the Greater Bay Area and its latest addition to a China network that already includes schools in Shanghai and several Guangdong cities. For the region's expatriate community, which draws heavily on Hong Kong-based multinationals, Macau casino operators and Taiwan-origin manufacturing firms, a full K-18 British pathway within the Pearl River Delta fills a gap that has existed since 2021 regulatory changes restricted foreign-curriculum schools on the mainland to students holding non-Chinese passports.

Those regulations, which the Guangzhou school is structured to comply with, have effectively capped the addressable market. AISL is wagering that the segment of genuinely international families in the Greater Bay Area is large enough to fill a campus of 1,530, and that a premium proposition built around technology and entrepreneurship will command the fee level needed to sustain it. If the early pipeline is strong, Guangzhou could become a model for how British-branded operators rebuild their China presence inside the regulatory constraints that have reshaped the market.
