Wellington College Opens the First British Heritage School in Indonesia

Wellington College Independent School Jakarta opened to its founding families in August 2026, becoming the first school in Indonesia to carry the Wellington College name. According to NOW! Jakarta, the campus sits in BSD City, a large planned township developed by Sinar Mas Land on the southern outskirts of Greater Jakarta.

The school is a venture of Wellington College Education Singapore Group, controlled by Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim. The brand it draws on is a 165-year-old English institution founded by Queen Victoria in 1859. The Jakarta campus operates under the IB Primary Years Programme, with instruction in English, Bahasa Indonesia, and Mandarin from the outset, a deliberate positioning for a market where local families increasingly want their children trilingual.

A market British schools overlooked

Indonesia has been conspicuously absent from the wave of British school openings that reshaped Southeast Asian education over the past decade. Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia have each accumulated multiple campuses of UK-heritage or UK-branded schools. Jakarta, by contrast, had largely remained an American and Australian curriculum city, with the international schools that set the market built principally for its significant diplomatic and corporate expatriate community. Wellington's arrival is a signal that operators now see Jakarta's large affluent local family population as the addressable market, not just the expat tier.

The inaugural cohort spans Pre-Nursery to Year 4, with the school targeting an initial intake of around 350 students on a 13,000-square-metre campus. Annual fees run from approximately IDR 198 million to IDR 546 million (USD 12,000 to USD 33,000), placing the school in Indonesia's premium tier but well below what British-heritage schools charge in Singapore or Hong Kong. Founding head of school Melissa Meyers described the aim as creating "a learning environment where every child feels welcomed, seen, nurtured, inspired."

A phased path to a full school

Wellington College Education Singapore Group has published a phased expansion plan. The BSD City junior school is Phase 1. A purpose-built senior school covering Years 8 to 13 is planned for a second site within the same township, with an expected opening around 2030. COBIS provisional school status, awarded in May 2026, gives the campus a recognised British accreditation pathway. Whether the senior school timeline holds will depend on how quickly the founding cohorts grow through the junior years and whether demand from Jakarta's local and expatriate families matches the optimism of the launch.
