Brighton College Singapore: from 36 pupils to an all-through school
Opened in August 2020 as a primary school in Serangoon, Brighton College Singapore has added a year group almost every term, and Sixth Form is now in sight.
Brighton College Singapore opened its doors on 27 August 2020, taking its first cohort at 1 Chuan Lane in Serangoon, a residential pocket of the island close to Lorong Chuan MRT. WhichSchoolAdvisor reported before opening that the school was a partnership between two organisations: Brighton College in East Sussex, which leads the educational philosophy and curriculum, and Cognita, the global schools group, which handles day-to-day operations. That structure has held firm ever since.
The parent school in Brighton was founded in 1845 by William Aldwin Soames, making it the first Victorian public school in Sussex. By the time Singapore launched, the UK college had been named England's Independent School of the Year twice by the Sunday Times, in 2012 and 2019, and would go on to receive the paper's School of the Decade title in 2020. Singapore was not Brighton College's first international venture: Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Bangkok and Dubai had all come before it.
Origins and Structure
The company behind the school, Brighton College (Singapore) Pte Ltd, was registered with Singapore's Committee for Private Education in October 2019 and received EduTrust status from the CPE in 2020. The school is built around two adjoining sub-schools on the same site: Pre-Prep, covering Pre-Nursery through Reception for children from 18 months, sits alongside the Australian International School campus and within Cognita's Early Learning Village; Prep, for Years 1 to 6, occupies the main school building next door.
Founding Head Master Paul Wilson came directly from Brighton College UK, where he had spent eight years overseeing academic, co-curricular, pastoral and charitable programmes. He opened the school with around 36 pupils, pitching the intake at up to Year 4 in that first year, with the plan to add a year group annually as the cohort aged through.
Year-by-Year Growth
The model worked. By 2022 the roll had reached 232, and the school picked up two gold awards at the HoneyKids Asia Singapore Education Awards 2021, winning Best New School and Best Small School. It won Best Small School again in 2022. In July 2022, the school announced it had received CPE approval to extend its curriculum to pupils up to 13 years old, adding Years 7 and 8 with effect from August 2023. At that point enrolment stood at 185.
Wilson handed over to Andrew Noakes in 2021. Noakes then steered the school through its senior expansion. By 2023, Cognita announced publicly that the ambition was an all-through school educating pupils from 18 months to 18 years old, branded internally as "A Brighton Future," subject to regulatory approvals. Year 9 opened in August 2024. The current Head of College is Nick Davies, who also inherited a Prep division led separately by Gavin Clark.
Curriculum and Accreditation
From the earliest years, the school has followed the English Early Years Foundation Stage in Pre-Prep, transitioning to the English National Curriculum from Year 1 upward. Mandarin is offered as a second language throughout; Prep pupils from Year 3 add French as a third. Year 5 upward moves to subject specialists and changes classrooms, mirroring the approach at Brighton UK. In the senior years, Years 7 to 9 carry a broad interdisciplinary timetable that includes an original programme called Story of Our Land, connecting history, geography and belief systems. IGCSE courses are now running, with all pupils required to take English Language, English Literature, Maths and the three separate sciences alongside a set of elective options.
The school holds BSO and COBIS accreditation, the two markers most associated with British international schools operating abroad. BSO inspection is the only overseas school inspection recognised by the UK government.
Present Day
The school currently enrolls 504 pupils across Pre-Nursery to Year 10. It occupies 1 Chuan Lane, Singapore 554299. Sixth Form, covering Years 11 and 12, is planned to open in 2026, which would complete the all-through structure from nursery to A level. Planned capacity sits at around 550, placing it firmly in the boutique bracket alongside longer-established British schools on the island. The school is the sixth member of the Brighton College international family.
