Nord Anglia Brings in a LEGO Education Scientist to Lead Its Schools

Nord Anglia Education has appointed Bo Stjerne Thomsen, the former head of educational impact at LEGO Education, as its first-ever Chief Learning Officer, a new executive-level position designed to drive a coherent learning strategy across the group's 90 schools in 37 countries. According to a group press release, the role takes effect on 1 October and Thomsen will report directly to chief executive Andrew Fitzmaurice.

Thomsen arrives with an unusual combination of credentials. He holds a PhD in performative learning environments from Aalborg University and a research affiliation with MIT, alongside nearly a decade leading learning science programmes at the LEGO Foundation and its commercial education arm. In those roles he helped translate decades of play-based learning research into classroom-ready materials used in tens of thousands of schools across more than 100 countries.

What the brief covers

The Chief Learning Officer role is new, and its scope is deliberately broad. Thomsen is charged with identifying and scaling teaching practices that work across Nord Anglia's global network, strengthening the group's use of research and evidence, and developing its approach to emerging technologies, AI in particular. Nord Anglia has pushed AI integration in recent years, but this appointment suggests a more principled, research-backed framework for how that happens in classrooms rather than in promotional materials.

Thomsen said the scale of the network was precisely what drew him. "What excites me about Nord Anglia is its willingness to pioneer new approaches to teaching and learning, combined with the scale to turn evidence and ideas into impact for more than 100,000 students across 37 countries," he said in the announcement. Fitzmaurice described the hire as bringing "a transformative perspective" and "a track record of translating research into practice."

The significance for Asia

Nord Anglia's Asia footprint is extensive, covering schools in Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Bangkok, and Vietnam, many of them at the top of the local fee tier. For families paying upwards of USD 40,000 a year, a unified and credible pedagogy is increasingly part of the calculation, particularly as standalone IB and British curriculum competitors have sharpened their offerings. Whether Thomsen's appointment signals a genuine shift in learning culture across the group, or a polished rebrand of what Nord Anglia already does, will become clearer as he moves into the role during the current academic year.
